Superficially, the hCG diet may seem like just another fad diet, but there’s much more to it than that. Let’s take a closer look at why this weight loss program is making waves.
The hCG Drops Diet isn’t a Fad
First and foremost, you need to know that the hCG diet is nothing new. It was developed during the 1950’s and 60’s by an eminent endocrinologist and today, it’s more popular than ever. Let’s face it, if it was a fad diet that didn’t work, everyone would have forgotten about it by now. So what does it entail?
Yup, it’s a diet. You’re going to restrict your calorie intake drastically. Some critics would say that you might even be restricting them to dangerous levels. So why did a doctor recommend it? British endocrinologist Dr Simeons noticed that a hormone known as hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin) promoted fat burning, not only in newly pregnant women who need that extra boost for baby, but also in young men he was treating for obesity and hypogonadism. This prompted him to do years of research on the phenomenon and culminated in the hCG diet.
What Role Does hCG play?
The hormone resets the metabolism and promotes fat burning. A low calorie diet on its own could just as easily burn muscle as fat, but once your metabolism targets itself towards fat burning, you not only lose more weight faster, but you can be sure that you’re losing fat. The fat fuels the body, so you don’t feel as hungry and you don’t feel weak or tired as you normally would when restricting your food intake because your body is getting lots of energy from your fat reserves.
So How Does it Work?
Here’s the skinny on the hCG diet in a nutshell: you’re going to eat lean meat and plenty of fruit and veg whilst counting calories carefully and you’re going to take hCG in the form of injections or sublingual drops in order to reset your metabolism. You’re going to lose weight really fast and you will have to be disciplined and stick to the diet. You won’t do this forever: after a few weeks, you’re going to start increasing your calories whilst monitoring your weight. You’re going to stop taking hCG and then you will be able to determine just how many calories you can eat in future so that you maintain your new, healthy weight.
Is it Lifestyle Change?
The hCG diet is more than just a diet, it’s the introduction to a healthier lifestyle. If you were overweight before trying the diet (why else diet?) you’re going to learn just how much and what sort of food you should eat in order to stay slim. Sure, once you’re off the diet, you might munch away at the occasional high calorie treat, but the emphasis is on the ‘occasional’. For the rest, you’re going to be eating healthy food that any doctor, naturopath or dietician would approve of wholeheartedly. Don’t try the hCG diet if you’re not ready to revise your eating habits in the long term. Severe calorie restrictions are only applied during the rapid weight loss phase, but thereafter you’ll be watching what you eat on a higher calorie allowance so that the unwanted fat stays off.
